Heatherton Activity Centre Christmas Cards

October 26, 2018 2 Comments

Hi Friends! If you regularly follow my blog and Serene Stamper Facebook page, then you’ll know that I volunteer at our local Activity Centre for adults with mentally challenged disabilities. We make cards together which they then sell to our community and the funds go back into this awesome non-profit organization. I absolutely LOVE spending time with the clients and workers at the centre and we always have a ton of fun together. It’s also great to watch the clients make their cards and they’re terrific at it too. Of course, I try to make the cards pretty but as simple as possible so that they’re easy to stamp and assemble.  Here are the cards we made and some photos from yesterday’s card making session:

We used the new “Snow is Glistening” stamp set, available in November. I cut the birds using the die from the “Stained Glass” thinlets, to add a pop of red on the trees and to tie in the colour of the sentiment. Pre-cutting card stock, tied bows and die cuts are things I do beforehand, keeping the cards fun and easy for the clients who are stamping and assembling them.
The “Hung with Care” host stamp set is just adorable. I loosely cased the design for this card from the sample shown in the 2018/19 Holiday catalogue.
Jonathon is very precise when it comes to making his cards!

I love that the workers at the centre enjoy making cards with us too. Next to Treena is RJ, who is a total pro – he just dives in and knows exactly what to do!

MaryAnne, a new worker at the centre, had never stamped cards before, so it was fun to see her give it a go! And yes, she really enjoyed it and is even planning on coming to some of my classes and events! Hannah has been making cards since I began volunteering at the centre and she loves it – especially the glitter! A girl after my own heart lol
Didn’t everyone do a great job on their cards?
If you live locally, these cards (and others) can be purchased at the Heatherton Activity Centre. The centre is also a bakery, and you can buy their delicious rolls, pies and sweet trays!

One of the reasons the Heatherton Activity Centre and my time volunteering there is important to me is because of this amazing lady…

…this is my Aunt Maureen and she lives back home on Vancouver Island. Aunt Moe also belongs to a similar organization for adults with disabilities. She loves going to work and answering the phones and I love that she has a place like this to go to, which she not only enjoys but gives her a sense of purpose too. My Aunt Maureen and I have a very special relationship and I love her to bits and pieces, and miss her tons. She’s sassy and funny and smart as a whip and gives the best bear hugs. I think a lot of people don’t realize how smart and intuitive people like Aunt Maureen really are.  I like to call my Aunt often, which I know means a lot to her too. The other night when I phoned her we had a good conversation, then I told her that I love and miss her. Without missing a beat, she told me she noticed. Hahah. I’m actually laughing as I type this. She always makes me laugh and is my ‘happy pill’. We are blessed to have Aunt Maureen in our family in more ways that I can count, she is a gift, that is for sure. If you are card maker or demonstrator, I encourage you to consider volunteering at your local centre for adults with learning disabilities. Your heart will be full and it’s wonderful to spend time with these lovely people!

AvatarI joined Stampin' Up! the first night they arrived in Canada, April 2002, and what a ride it's been! At the time I just wanted the discount on all of the fabulous stamps and accessories - why pay full price if you don't have to, right? But little did I know where my journey with Stampin' Up! would take me. Read More…
