By the Tide Card for Dad

January 25, 2013 Leave a Comment

Hi Friends! HAPPY FRIDAY!  It’s always so nice when the weekend comes – even for those of us who work from home.  Unless I have a class or event schedule on a weekend, I usually take Saturday and Sunday off to do things with my hubby.  This weekend though I am planning on STAMPING! I have so many new stamps and accessories to play with from the Spring Catalogue and Sale-a-bration and I can’t wait!
Yesterday was the first chance I had to break open my new ‘By the Tide‘ stamp set so that I could make a birthday card for my Dad.  When I first saw this set I knew I had to get it with my Dad – and brother – in mind.  They’re avid fishers – as am I, though I haven’t gone fishing since I moved to New Brunswick.  My brother and I grew up fishing.  It’s in our blood.  My Grandpa Zinck was big in to fishing too, especially as my Dad’s family hails from Nova Scotia, with a lot of fishermen in the family (side note: one of my Zinck relatives even helped design the Bluenose and another was First Mate on the vessel!).
Back to fishing.  My Dad and Grandpa made sure that I even cleaned my own fish – and being the only girl fishing, there was no way I was going to let the guys show me up. So clean my fish I did – no problemo.  Grandpa liked jigging for bottom fish – cod and snapper.  Dad likes to troll for salmon – Chinook, Spring, Co-ho.  Now he and my brother are also into fishing Halibut.  Aside from fishing for the Halibut (I’m just not into the rough waters and spears), I really do enjoy fishing, for both cod and salmon. I like fresh water fishing too.  Nothing beat a fresh trout caught and cooked right there on the edge of the lake, in a little butter and salt and pepper.  SO GOOD.  One of my favourite ways to cook salmon is with this recipe.  But my VERY favourite is salmon on the BBQ is just amazing – though more often than not I would get out the ‘Little Chief’ and smoke the salmon I’d caught.  Nothing smells as good as salmon smoking out in your yard, with a mixture of cherry, apple and maple wood.  My mouth is watering, just thinking about it.  And on the RARE days that we didn’t catch any fish, we were just happy to be out on the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and scenery of the Comox Valley.
My Dad enjoying a cup of coffee during one of our fishing trips.
So of course, I had to make my Dad’s birthday card with “By the Tide“.  I hope he likes it!  I embossed the fish in clear embossing powder and raised it with stampin’ dimensionals.  The background was really fun to make – I used the water colour crayons for that and I plan on making a video to demonstrate this cool technique.  So stayed tuned for that.

I joined Stampin' Up! the first night they arrived in Canada, April 2002, and what a ride it's been! At the time I just wanted the discount on all of the fabulous stamps and accessories - why pay full price if you don't have to, right? But little did I know where my journey with Stampin' Up! would take me. Read More…
